Audio 5.1, 6.1, or 7.1 surround sound?

Basic surround sound provided by Dolby and dts includes 5 channels of independent sound; left, right, center, right-surround and left-surround. One low frequency channel for the sub woofer is also provided, this is the .1 of 5.1 . Some new software including THX-EX movies include a center-surround channel stipulated as 6.1. This is highly recommended by HomeTech as it adds greater immersion and realism to movies with the multi-track mix. Rear panning of space ships, rustling leaves and creaking floors all come to life with the additional speaker in the rear center of the theater. Many of today’s quality audio components also provide 7.1 surround for two rear and two side surround channels. These are “derived” channels and not discrete tracks taken off the DVD disc, however with DSP technology and other processing functions the addition of two extra channels is a must in theaters with more than one row of seating. This is the same arrangement as at the multiplex cinema with all seats being near an ambient speaker.
